Coming from a heavy set family, I was never in good shape growing up and sadly I continued to gain weight in my teenage years. It was during this time I developed man boobs. Being one of the heaviest kids in my class, I was often made fun of, did not have many friends, and never had a date in high school. It was a horrible period in my life, and this no joke, but looking back, I’m pretty sure I was clinically depressed from being the hefty kid growing up with “man-boobies”. That time seems like ancient history, now I’m a completely different person.

I was never that big into exercising much and being active in sports was just not for me. Plain and simple I could just not keep up with the other kids. I would get so winded I could hardly breath. I did play some tackle in high school football and a year of college before being injured, but I did manage to letter. Although it felt great to be part of a team, it always felt like I was being made fun of – serious or not. I somehow ended up with the nickname “Cow” since I had udders. Now I am not embarrassed to admit it – I did have pretty bad man boobs, and my nipples were almost the size of half dollars. I pretended to not be bothered and laughed with everyone else, but it tore me up inside. For years and years I carried those hurtful memories with me.

When I graduated, I lost a lot weight but never felt happy and just put it back on after a couple months. Looking back now, I put the weight back on, because no matter how hard I tried, I could not get rid of the fat on my chest. I was just tired of being humiliated. Though I was lucky enough to meet a terrific girl, I would never ever let her see me without a shirt on. All I could wear for clothing was either doubled up shirts or heavy sweaters. There are various treatments for gynecomastia, it depends on the level of treatment that you prefer and the course you will ultimately take to get rid of your man boobs. There are medications, surgeries, and exercises you can perform to lessen, even totally eliminate, your gynecomastia. If you opt for medications or surgeries, be forewarned that, often times, insurance companies will not cover expenses, because they deem the treatment of gynecomastia “cosmetic”. Well, the doctor was wrong.  In fact my man boobs stayed with me into my later teen years, which was an excruciating time.  I did have friends and all, and I’m sure they meant no harm - but I was the butt of a ton of jokes.  When we would go boating, it was traumatizing to take my shirt off. My friends said, “look at Mark, he’s got boobs haha…he has sanddollar-sized nipples.”  I’d laugh it off, but it did hurt my feelings.
